Nursery Bleeker started in 1925, by Grandpa Hein, with the cultivation of vegetables and strawberries. His son, my father Cor, began growing flowers, especially flowered roses. Because the sandy soil isn’t of use enough for the heavy quality roses, we started growing summer flowers and Nerine. Today we grow mainly Astilbe and Nerine. In small numbers also Fritillaria, Sandersonia and Bessera. We’re still looking out for new flowers but our main focus is on new varieties in the Astilbe and Nerine.
Through contacts with breeders, new cultivars of the ‘Astilbe Muziek’ series, such as ‘Honky Tonk’ and ‘Boogie Woogie’, are the ones who provide for successes. Unfortunately, the supply of new plant material isn’t easy. So ‘Europa’ remains a large part of the supply. With a lot of personal attention a good product is put into the market neatly. We also try to do this socially responsible. Solar panels provide power generation. There is also a lot of attention to the soil by stimulating life in it with organic fertilization, and we use as little as possible tillage and chemical means and the use of green manure. If still needed, biological resources are used as much as possible. Every year, step by step, we learn to work more and more sustainably and surprise our customers.
