Koen van Zeil
For more than 25 years, Van Zeil’s small-scale nursery is specialized in the cultivation of Muscari, also known as the Blue Grape.
At the nursery the little bulbs of the Muscari are treated to bloom in the greenhouse, a process the Dutch call “afbroeien”. This way of working can provide a large period for flowering Muscari. Although the name Blue grapes suggests that blue is the only color of Muscari, there are also white ones, such as the Muscari Album and double-coloured Muscaris, such as the Muscari Helena, a blue one with a little white hat. Even the color blue is not the same, there are many shades of blue, such as the Muscari Manon, they all differ enough from each other to be interesting.
Kwekerij van Zeil Supplies these Muscaris from the end of December until the end of April. Although the nursery already has the best varieties, Van Zeil is always looking out for better species even more beautiful or even better of quality. New found species are first tried and tested on the nursery. Also Zinnias in various colours are cultivated at Van Zeil’s nursery, from June until September. This kind of old-fashioned flower is popular again and looks real pretty because of its colour in a natural bouquet.
Besides these flowers, the special ornamental grass Cyperus Glaber is grown until late in autumn. Its special form differs entirely from the many species present on the market. Because of the small-scale cultivation and the regular supply, the crops that Koen van Zeil manufactures remain exclusive.
Koen van Zeil supplies most flowers to Royal FloraHolland in Aalsmeer under supply number 5489.
