Since 1999, Kwekerij Kool has been the only company completely specialised in the breeding and cultivation of rosehip as an ornamental product. This outdoor cultivation company, located in Wilp, currently has an area of 5.5 ha.
It originally began with the cultivar ‘Fair Jewel’, which was actually discovered in Wageningen by accident during research into improving rootstocks for greenhouse roses. From this basis, further
selections and refinements were carried out, with the emphasis on shelf-life, harvest spread, lack of thorns and stem presentation. Technical aspects of cultivation such as productivity and disease-
resistance were also carefully looked into. During cultivation, as many sustainable options as possible are applied, for example, the use of matured wood compost, earthworms and organic pesticides. Our company focuses exclusively on the development of so-called rambling rosehip varieties, cultivated as rambling roses. The newest sorts are put on the market under the trade name:
“Autumn”, for instance Autumn Joy, Autumn Spirit, Autumn Ouverture, Autumn Rosefruit and Autumn Splendor. These are all sorts with a large head of small bottles. Stay up to date on the
newest developments in our company and in the collection by following our Facebook page Kwekerij Kool and on Instagram Koolmichael.
Through our collaboration with Armada, co-sponsor of Summerflowers, we want to improve our collection and make it available to a wider range of growers. By participating in Summerflowers we
hope our products get the attention they deserve.
