Kwekerij van Wingerden
Brothers Cock and Ton van Wingerden own and run the company, Van Wingerden Limonium
Van Wingerden Limonium is a modern greenhouse company, and has specialised in growing Limonium sinuatum, also known as the combed statice, since 1991.
The cultivar, Crystal Dark Blue has been grown since 1991. The plant material comes from tissue culture, which means a high level of uniformity is safeguarded. This Statice is characterised by an extremely strong twig with an even stronger blue colour, if that is possible. Cultivation of this variant has actually raised the Statice to a higher level and is an essential component of the Dutch assortment. The excellent longevity and strong colour makes this flower the longest stayer in a bouquet.
This flower was grown in the ground until 2001. Due to continued modernisation and demands in the area of re-circulation, a new greenhouse was built in 2001, and cultivation was taken out of the ground. The plants are now cultivated in coconut balls, with fully controlled nutrition and watering. The new system enables excess water to be collected and re-used. Because of this measure, the company immediately met the currently applicable environmental regulations.
This is however not the only way the company works on sustainability. The diseases are biologically controlled. The predatory mite, Montdorensis, is used to combat Trips and the Aphischout prevents lice. These natural enemies bring balance in the crop which means chemical control is no longer necessary. Even mould is treated with the introduction of biological preparations like Trichoderma. A large percentage of electricity is generated by solar panels on the roof of the processing area.
To make all sustainable actions visible, the company is MPS-A certified.
Van Wingerden nursery works on being future-ready and is open to new developments in the area of quality, service and sustainability.
By participating in Summerflowers Van Wingerden wants to create publicity for the Limonium sinuatum and the Van Wingerden nursery. They believe the product is worth it.
The flowers are supplied from April to early November in Naaldwijk, Aalsmeer and Rijnsburg, the large locations of Royal FloraHolland flower auction.
